Disaster movies and the effect they have on viewers' expectations of disasters

Disaster movies have been fan favorites since the invention of cinema, and movies like Twisters prove they are still just as popular. Research shows that these movies can have a lasting effect on the way viewers understand scientific concepts, and their perception of what they expect to experience during a disaster. Dr. Carr will discuss how these movies depict human behavior, protective action, emergency management, and how these movies affect viewers.

Dr. John Carr
Dr. John Carr is a disaster researcher and educator out of Kansas City, Missouri. John’s research interests include disasters and pop culture, emergency management in higher education, capacity building for emergency management professionals, and rural emergency management. John is an Emergency Management Analyst within the National Preparedness Analytics Center at Argonne National Laboratory. He supports FEMA Resilience’s Technical Assistance projects on topics such as public alerts and warnings, and restoring flow to supply chains.
