Outreach Presentations

About our presentations

We help people more skillfully navigate features of personal computers, cell phones, tablets, digital photography, smart cars and homes, … covering both software and hardware.

Here are some of the presentations that we offer to outside organizations:

  1. Cybersecurity: how to use a computing device safely
With the Internet as it is today, you have to protect yourself from the “elements.” It’s a jungle out there, with all kinds of threats. As soon as your computer, tablet, or smartphone is on and connected to the internet, you are vulnerable. Answering the phone has also become a risk factor. So be proactive to protect your computing device, your data, and your hard earned money.

We will cover what you need to have and what you need to do to help you toward achieving that goal.

  2. Your Digital Legacy
So you think that just having a will is good enough? We will walk through the pitfalls of dying without preparing your digital life for the “afterlife.” We will pose some crucial questions you SHOULD deal with right now (BUT would prefer not to).

How will the people who survive you deal with the continuing dangers of your digital life? Don’t scam your heirs, family, friends, and everyone you have ever known, from your grave.

  3. Managing your email
Today you can read emails in a browser on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Alternatively, you can use a native application on your computer, or an app on your tablet or smartphone. We will compare Webmail vs using an application, the pros and cons of each.

Are you frustrated with your current email provider? Do you wish you could switch to another one? It is much easier than you may think. Are you getting too many emails? We’ll propose a solution.

  4. Managing your passwords
We all have countless passwords: our banks, credit cards, brokerage accounts, healthcare providers, favorite retailers, and many more. Remembering them all is impossible. But sticky notes or even a small notebook is not the answer to keep our passwords safe and manage them.

We will explore solutions for managing our passwords.

  5. 2FA: Protecting against password theft
Two what? Two-Factor Authentication. This fancy looking term is the key to more secure access to your email, your favorite online retailer, your online Social Security account, your online banking account, and more. Passwords as the only mean of authentication is no longer sufficient to be safe, as they can be stolen (it has been often enough in the news, hasn’t it?).

You need something else to protect yourself in case your credentials are stolen. It could mean the difference between sleeping soundly and having your email account taken over, or worse, your bank account wiped clean. Come find out how to take advantage of this security feature.

  6. Why (and how) should I backup my computing devices?
Backups are a necessary evil (or… chore) of owning a personal computer, or any computing device for that matter. But why? Come find out what are the main reasons you can lose data, whether it’s a computer, phone, or tablet.

We will also discuss ways to safeguard your data, whether you are using a PC, a Mac, an iPhone/iPad or an Android phone/tablet.

  7. How to go paperless
We will cover the concept of going paperless, the advantages and the drawbacks. I have been doing so since 2007. We will describe how you can reduce the paper clutter, download your statements and organize them, and protect them from disaster.

It applies to your bank statements, your preferred airline miles, or your internet service provider bills, and then some. And what to do with all that paper that you no longer need? Come learn about this green initiative and save the environment.
